What You Need to Know About Sedation Dentistry
When you schedule an appointment with us, let us know if you have dental anxiety so that we can prepare for your visit accordingly. For many people, the actual procedure is not uncomfortable but it is the anxiety and worry that causes angst. With this in mind, we often prescribe an oral sedative or laughing gas that can be administered prior to the appointment to help a person relax. While this is not a pain killer, it eases the fear and relaxes the body so that you can remain peaceful while having teeth cleaned, or dental work performed. While the dosage is different, laughing gas can be used on both children and adults so that all of our Nacogdoches patients can remain comfortable.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
When dental work is needed some patients may prefer to have some type of sedation. As a sedation dentist, this is an effective tool for us to prevent and eliminate any discomfort. You will remain awake during your treatment and will be able to follow instructions. There are several types of sedation offered, the first is nitrous oxide/ laughing gas.
Laughing gas is a mild form of sedation dentistry. Most patients who are anxious elect for this level of sedation. It is a gas that you receive through a mask that helps to relax you and to relieve anxiety. Other effects are that it lowers the gag reflex and diminishes pain sensations. After the procedure is complete the nitrous is flushed out of your system with oxygen and there are no lingering effects thus allowing you to drive yourself to and from your appointment.
If laughing gas does not provide enough relief for anxiety there is another option that involves a pill either alone or in conjunction with nitrous oxide. This type of sedation can help with making you feel sleepy and relaxed and you may or may not be able to recall the details of your visit. This type of sedation is not appropriate for all patients however and if you are interested in discussing your sedation treatment options we would be happy to evaluate you.
